Myanmar Currency

Myanmar_Kyat_All The official currency of Myanmar is “Kyat” and USD is use as an alternative currency but normally most of the places like and local restaurants, taxi, bus and train rides only accept local bills except hotels and big restaurants. It is better deal if you pay with local currency because those places usually have a lower exchange rate. I highly recommend you to bring the USD in pristine and perfect condition (without any creases, marks, folds, etc.) and newer than 2006 otherwise it won’t be accepted or will pay you a very low exchange rate. In addition, the larger bills usually get a better rate at any exchange counters in Myanmar. There are many exchange counters at the major airports, banks or the major city centers. The exchange rate is 1 USD = 1460 Kyats as of 10th August 2018. There are many ATM machines but only in the big cities and you can find that at the airports, hotels, shopping centers, some convenience stores, restaurants and near the banks. Visa, Master, Union Pay and JCB cards are usable in Myanmar and you can do cash withdrawal of the local currency in some ATM machines with the limited amounts and transitions. The credit card payment is acceptable in some places but it is still very limited. Be aware that travellers’ cheques are generally not accepted throughout the country.
