Yangon, also known as Rangoon, is the biggest and main commercial city of the Myanmar. History
Yangon was small village that is lived by fishermen families. They built the village by centering the Shwe Dagon Pagoda. Ancient Mon found Yangon as Dagon in the early year of 11 century. At the time, it is known as the part of Lower Burma. In 1772, King Alaungphaya renamed as Yangon (The meaning in Myanmar is the city that is passed over the danger). The British first captured Yangon in the First Anglo-Burmese War (1824-26) but returned it Burmese administration after the war.
Places to visit
Shwedagon shouldn’t be missed to visit since it was landmark of the Myanmar. Kandawgyi and Yangon Zoo are situated near by Shwedagon. Inya Lake and People Park are also popular public places that should be visited. National Museum is also located in Yangon. Downtown area is also attracted to tourists. Yangon Circular train is the main transportation for railway since Yangon Central Railway Station is located in Yangon. Yangon circular trains are popular again because the main roads of city are crowed with buses, taxi and cars which made Yangon more traffic especially in the rush hours. An average of 100,000 to 150,000 commuters (including students, workers, office staffs, costermongers and monks) go to their particular places by riding Yangon Circular Trains for everyday. There will be 39 stations that linked the city’s commercial area with the suburbs area in one big loop if you take a ride of Yangon Circular Train. The loop begins from Yangon Central Railway Station and it will take around 3 hours to finish the whole circuit. Bus and taxi
For going around the city, you can take taxi, buses or trains. “Grab” is the most popular taxi service application in Myanmar which shows the fixed price or you can call the taxi on the streets. Most of Taxis in Myanmar are not meter taxi so have to deal the price in advance before get in. If you want to try to ride a bus, I recommend you use the “HappyGoGo” or “YBus: Yangon Bus” application if you are in Yangon. You don’t need to worry about the food in Myanmar because there is wide variation of restaurants, fast food shops, cafes, bakery, tea shops, etc. Some restaurants open for 24 hours. There is also many food stalls if you are into the street foods but you should aware that the hygiene standard may be low in Myanmar. You can also try the variety of local ethnic cuisines such as Rakhine, Chin, Shan, Kachin, Mon and many more.
